Ahead of Monday’s blockbuster Premier League match between England’s two most successful sides, we look back at the last five Anfield clashes between Liverpool and Manchester United. Last season brought about the first ever meeting between the two clubs in European competition, as they met in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League.
10th March, 2016 – Liverpool 2 Manchester United 0
The first leg was played at Anfield, with the home side running out 2-0 winners in a dominant performance; Manchester United managed just one shot on target compared to Liverpool’s eight. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring from the spot after Memphis Depay fouled Nathaniel Clyne in the penalty area and Roberto Firmino doubled the advantage with a close range finish in the second half. The victory set the pace for Liverpool to go on and win the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
17th January, 2016 – Liverpool 0 Manchester United 1
Just shy of two months prior to that European clash was a more familiar Premier League meeting between the two sides, where a Wayne Rooney strike sealed the points for then-manager Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United. The goal came from United’s one and only shot on target, which also happened to end an 11-year Anfield goal drought for Rooney. The visitor’s dominated possession, not uncommon in the Van Gaal era, but it was Liverpool who created the best goal scoring opportunities; David De Gea a thorn in their side as he took out the Man of the Match award with a string of impressive saves.
22 March, 2015 – Liverpool 1 Manchester United 2
The last time Steven Gerrard faced bitter rivals United would end in ignominy for The Reds skipper; he was sent off just 38 seconds after coming on in the second half for a stamp on Ander Herrera. Manchester United produced a convincing display, Juan Mata providing both goals, the latter of which was a spectacular bicycle-kick. Daniel Sturridge pulled one back for the hosts, beating David De Gea at his near post, but it was too-little too-late as United ran out deserving winners.
1 September 2013 – Liverpool 1 Manchester United 0
Liverpool’s impressive start to the 2013/14 season, their best since 1994/95, played a big part in the building of momentum they had to push for a title challenge. This win over United was an undoubtable major confidence boost, with Daniel Sturridge scoring his third winner of the season in a row after guiding a Daniel Agger header past David De Gea from close range.
23 September 2012 – Liverpool 1 Manchester United 2
A late Robin Van Persie penalty sealed the points for Alex Ferguson in his last visit to Anfield as United boss. Liverpool broke the deadlock early in the second half when Steven Gerrard expertly chest-and-volleyed past Anders Lindegaard, but did so after The Reds were reduced to 10 men when Jonjo Shelvey was sent off for a dangerous two-footed lunge. Rafael equalized with a sensational curler into the top corner past a hapless Pepe Reina, before Glen Johnson’s ill-timed challenge on Antonio Valencia inside the area gave Van Persie the opening to go on and win the game from the penalty spot.
